In Peru there are people with big dreams, big enough to reach Mars. Like young Luciana Tenorio, who works on structures that allow humankind to colonize Mars. Tenorio´s project is one of the five revolutionary ideas conceived by the Innovators Under 35 Peru 2015. These five young people represent the second generation of Peruvians to receive the award granted by our publication, MIT Technology Review, Spanish edition.

Biomedicine, transportation, virtual reality, space exploration and digital education are the five areas addressed by the award winners´ projects. All of them stand out because they afford an innovative approach to offering technological solutions in their respective disciplines, from the ability to remotely order bacteria with modified DNA to be delivered to your home to a platform that connects companies with messengers. To ensure the high quality of these projects, we contacted an international panel of expert judges familiar with the different fields, who selected these projects from amongst over 100 candidates.

The winners received their awards at an event celebrated last Wednesday at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru attended by more than 200 people. The awards were delivered by the director of the Innovation Team at Telefonica Peru, Sandra M. Torres.

The special mention of Innovator of the Year was awarded to Renato Salas for his development of a mixed reality system, and he was presented with this recognition by the assistant administrative dean of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and head of the Engineering department, Carlos Fosca. The Social Innovator special mention went to Mariana Costa for her company that provides digital web programming training for young, Peruvian women. Costa was presented with this special mention by Viviana Caro, a representative from the Inter-American Development Bank in Peru.

This second edition of these awards in Peru consolidates the Andean country´s role as part of the community of Innovators Under 35 and demonstrates the country´s potential to drive innovation and technological development. The project manager and member of the Business Development department at Opinno, Patricia Jimenez, explains: “Without a doubt, the community we are developing includes the leaders that will solve important problems that affect our society and economy.”
